Mallard duck painting entitled “Safely Home”

On October 22 2010, I started a new painting entitled “Safely Home”. I completed the painting today and posted the images to the Acrylic Gallery on my website. The painting is a waterfowl painting and features a pair of mallard ducks returning to the spot in the old cypress lake where they always felt the most secure and call home year after year.

This painting is an original acrylic on stretched canvas with an image size of 24″ x 18″ and was modeled after an old cypress lake near my home in south Georgia.  The painting was a complete joy to create right from the beginning of the complete sketch through the last brush stroke.

The painting depicts a pair of mallard ducks with the drake leading the hen into the spot in the lake where they can feel secure from predators. The background is kind of dark and ominous and gives the viewer the sense of the unknown lurking in the brush. The old cypress trees were a pleasure to paint with the textures and colors that the reference photographs presented. I took the reference photos a couple of years ago while on a fishing trip with my oldest son in a lake near my home here in south Georgia.

It is a huge lake covering approximately 200 acres and is located about 10 miles from my home. The lake dates back to the Civil War days and is gorgeous for bass fishing. With all the photographs I have of the lake, I’m looking forward to creating more unique paintings in the very near future.

Until next time, keep your brushes clean, your colors pure, and as always, thanks for stopping by the North Forty.

Thank you.
